Not working can mean many things. What happens when you try to use whatever you downloaded? Do you push the new button and then proceed with the install and it some how hangs up? Does it install and then not open when you get done? Are some of the features not working after you install? Please give us some where to start to help you with the problem.
Solaris is Unix not Linux. Their environments are very similar once you get them installed and working, but it has been my experience that Unix installation into Fusion can be somewhat complicated. I completely gave up on FreeBSD, for instance, but there are many people out there using Solaris on Fusion and they should be able to help you.

When I boot the OpenSolaris VM image, it complains that the ip address is already taken, which of course it is by the WinXP host interface adapter. Other vmware images use a private 192.168.x.x ip address and work fine on
my computer, is there some reason this can't be done for OpenSolaris?

There should be a way to change the network type (all of the ones that are from smyl's site are setup with bridged networking (i think)
you want to change it to something nat based (where your PC acts like the router.)
What VMware product are you using?

I am currently trying to open Opensolaris 2008.5 in VMPlayer, and it seems like it is going to work, but keeps asking for a username, and then a password.
despite several attempts with different combinations of each, I have had no luck.
Anyone got any helpful suggestions to get arround this problem?
Cheers

it _should_ be vmplanet / vmplanet.net
