I tried to download and install an appliance and it would not let me find the disk image as the format was .7z; I have the expander to open this archive and I still was not able to open/install the appliance.

I have a copy of the iso's for Linux 10 freeware and burned to disk- installed without a problem

I had difficulty with Linux 9 which I own a full copy of and am having trouble with the "Install VMWare Tools" to get the full screen on my imac

Can i install "just a program" or are the appliances all operating systems?

By the expander, i am assuming that you mean one of the tools to uncompress 7-zip archives, if not, there is a list of them from 7-zip's download page (http://7-zip.org/download.html).

If you are using one of the 7-zip tools, which one are you using and what image is it having problems with?

also, in regards to Linux 9 & Linux 10, what distribution of Linux are they?

not all Distro's are supported by VMware's tools.

I used BetterZip

I have the full copy of Suse 9.0 Professional-when I loaded it the screen was very tiny-so gather not a lot of support for my 24" imac screen

I have the opensource version of Suse 10.00 and it has loaded fine with options for the screen. I also was able to install the VMTools. Everything is working fine-I am just not up to speed on Linux which is why I think the VMWare is a great find

What I was wondering is how to install the appliances and if I download them will I need an image file vs the compressed ones

With the appliances from vmplanet you would have to uncompress them and open the .vmx file
A few people have had trouble with fusion, and I don't currently have a mac =/

Downloaded opensuse-11.0-KDE.7z from the VMware appliances site, and I've tried to unarchive it with unarchiver and StuffIt to know avail.

I get the following error:

Could not extract the file "openSUS-11.0-KDE/openSUSE 11.0 KDE-f001.vmdk": Unknown data format
