View Full Version : Let's Make the VM Tools Work

Let me say right off, that I want the VMware tools to work and work
with any distro that I put onto a vm. That is not to say that I
refuse to do any work on my end to make that a reality. I use Fusion and am quite happy with it, but the "one size fits all" set
of tools that comes with Fusion will break every time a new distro comes out and the normal response to a trouble report is, wait for
the new set of tools to come out, which may not even fix the problem
unless the distro is Windows. If it's Linux, you're at the back
of the bus. This problem is not limited to one particular brand
of vm manager either. Fusion, Parallels, etc, all seem to have it. I'm sure there's a reason for this, so don't flame me.

One of the problems seems to be with the tool breaking because it can't rebuild the kernel for the Linux that is being used. If this is the only problem and the source code for the kernel needs to be put
into the files of the distro, then someone could just indicate that and I will
fetch the files and put them where the tools needs them to be. It
would be better if the script was written to do this, but the code
is open and readily available for all. If there are more problems
than this, then just let me know. I want to solve the problem and
not just stand here and complain about one. This forum is a good
place to put this info also, so more than just a few people benefit. Be advised, however, that many of us are stilling learning this stuff through OJT and are not software professionals. : - )

The tools from workstation 6.5 beta work on Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 3.

Not sure if they will work w/ fusion or not, but I would think they would be compatible...

Or maybe not...
I'll have to check to see if tools from 6.5 work on 6.0
