FYI,
I finally got PCLinuxOS downloaded and it installed easily into a Fusion vm. The VMware tools were installed also in a normal manner and they worked first time! After many other installations of different distro's, having the VMware tools install normally and working properly is exciting for this simple- minded kid.
Download of this distro is rocky as the server is way overloaded, but the patient person that downloads it won't be disappointed. The layout is clean and very easy to navigate. The desktop manager is apparently Xfce, which is totally unfamiliar to me. It's easy enough to get around in, though. Under the hood, it is also very much Ubuntu. For the security conscious types, the installer doesn't install as root and so whoever the users are have to use sudo for admin. Package management is apt-get like Ubuntu. Cheers.
