Kubuntu is a user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone.



The KDE 4 series has begun with the release of 4.0. It is the start of something amazing.

The KDE Community is thrilled to announce the immediate availability of KDE 4.0. This significant release marks both the end of the long and intensive development cycle leading up to KDE 4.0 and the beginning of the KDE 4 era.

The KDE 4 Libraries have seen major improvements in almost all areas. The Phonon multimedia framework provides platform independent multimedia support to all KDE applications, the Solid hardware integration framework makes interacting with (removable) devices easier and provides tools for better power management.

The KDE 4 Desktop has gained some major new capabilities. The Plasma desktop shell offers a new desktop interface, including panel, menu and widgets on the desktop as well as a dashboard function. KWin, the KDE Window manager, now supports advanced graphical effects to ease interaction with your windows.

Lots of KDE Applications have seen improvements as well. Visual updates through vector-based artwork, changes in the underlying libraries, user interface enhancements, new features, even new applications -- you name it, KDE 4.0 has it. Okular, the new document viewer and Dolphin, the new file manager are only two applications that leverage KDE 4.0's new technologies.

The Oxygen Artwork team provides a breath of fresh air on the desktop. Nearly all the user-visible parts of the KDE desktop and applications have been given a facelift. Beauty and consistency are two of the basic concepts behind Oxygen.

This VMWare image lets you try it out without installing it or even rebooting your machine, and works in the Free VMWare player.

I have this installed on a imac g5 with vmware fusion and I am happy to report that many kde apps tested are working. I have a problem with networking, I can use the host network share but it will only work within the local net which does not require the proxy. Our network sytem uses certain scripts like /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. However I cannot modify these /etc directory and sudo command asks for password which I do not have (it is not vmplanet.net). I systematically changed all the other proxy setting and ("bridge" option does not work) the NAT is the only working option. The winXp with fusion has no problem with the bridge and works thru the proxy. I thought to put the scripts in the /etc folder, I wouldappreciate if anyone could offer some tips.

Hi:
Thank you for the info. Now I am running into another problem. When I do the networking start command (sudo /etc/init.d/networking start) it tells me that eth0 device not detected (in fact none the network devices eth0, eth1, eth2 and wlan are detected).
I am not sure why this is so. The network is working within the local domain level I can ping the router and the main server when using the bridge connection mode in vmware. I suspect this may be still to do with proxy. Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Any ideas why this image wont play in the free VMWare Server 1.0.5?

I get...

"Unable to add virtual machine ... Configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version"

The image was created with VMware Workstation.

It does work with the free Player.
